WHITE SOX BITS BY MARK GONZALES
Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn a hot commodity
Assistant GM's name still being touted for top jobs
June 29, 2008
White Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn talked to St. Louis and Pittsburgh about their vacant GM jobs last fall, and he's likely to draw more interest soon.Negotiating contracts is Hahn's primary responsibility, but his boss, Sox GM Ken Williams, believes Hahn is a capable talent evaluator as well."He's probably overqualified to be a GM," Williams said Saturday. "Rick is one of the smartest people I know and one of the most prepared people you'll ever find. There are a lot of people who have those qualities, but the management skills aren't equal, and [he has] the personality to deal with all the many personalities that you find in this game."The day he becomes a general manager will be the day my job gets a lot harder."
That could occur soon. Hahn backed out of consideration with the Cardinals and Pirates, but his name already has surfaced for the Seattle job if the Mariners look outside the organization this off-season.Hahn has expanded his portfolio, as evidenced by his scouting of No. 1 pick Gordon Beckham before the amateur draft."Every aspect of all the things we do, he has been involved in," Williams said. "In many cases he has been in the forefront of our thinking in player acquisitions."Hahn, a New Trier High graduate, said he aspires to become a GM but appreciates working for Williams and Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf in his home area."The fact is, last off-season I gave Jerry and Kenny my word that I would only leave the Sox for a handful of specific opportunities that make the most sense for my family," Hahn said. "So, barring something unforeseen, they're stuck with me for a little while longer."
Extra inningsPaul Konerko will leave Sunday for a brief rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Charlotte if his left oblique muscle responds well. He took batting practice Saturday for the first time since he got hurt two weeks ago. "This was obviously a big day on the field," Konerko said. "But up until now, every test that we've had, starting with last Sunday with all the little tests that we've built up leading up to today, I've passed easily." … The Sox had internal discussions but decided for now against trying to re-sign veteran pitcher Freddy Garcia, who is rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Garcia, who is expected to audition in front of scouts in four weeks, has drawn strong interest from the Yankees, Mets and Tigers.

JACKSON --The mayor of Jackson is staffing 70 vacant city jobs with people aged 14 to 20 - and hopes to expand it into a year-round program.
Mayor Frank Melton said some of the youth will start work as early as Monday. He said more than 35 local businesses have volunteered to hire 50 more people from applicants for city summer jobs.
The City Council has turned Melton's proposal down once.
Councilwoman Margaret Barrett-Simon worried putting young people in adult jobs may violate federal labor laws.
, and increase the risk of lawsuits if a young worker gets hurt.
Melton said the expansion does not hold any more liability than existing summer jobs for which more than 300 young people have been hired.
Personnel director Wendy Crumpton said every department head is getting detailed instructions on jobs the young people can and cannot do.

Vacancies are up, but jobs still going begging

THE labour market remains as tight as a drum and wages could grow in coming months, the latest official employment figures suggest.
Employers still need to offer incentives to retain and hire staff, prompting the spectre of an inflationary wages blowout and interest rate rises to curb labour costs.
Economists say the tight jobs market, where the ratio of unemployed to each job vacancy is at a record low, could still force the Reserve Bank to raise official interest rates to stifle inflationary pressures.
Total job vacancies rose 2.5 per cent in the three months to May, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said yesterday.
Job vacancies rose 9.4 per cent over the year to May, the third straight year of annual jobs growth at 9.4 per cent.
CommSec equities economist Savanth Sebastian said employers need to offer incentives to keep staff and hire new workers in the tight jobs market.
"It is a challenge to attract and retain staff and it's not going to get any easier,'' Mr Sebastian said.
ICAP economist Matthew Johnson said the labour market was tight with 2 1/2 unemployed people for every available job over the three months.
"An all-time low since the survey was collected (in 1979),'' he said.
"The increase in the number of vacant jobs suggests that the recent sluggish employment performance may prove to have been a temporary blip rather than the turning of the labour market worm.''
The ACT had the biggest percentage rise in job vacancies, with a 15.2 per cent increase in the quarter.
In NSW the job vacancies rose 3.4 per cent, compared with Queensland, which gained 8 per cent and Victoria, which rose 6.4 per cent.
The Northern Territory experienced the biggest fall in vacancies in the three months to May, down 13.5 per cent, followed by South Australia, down 12 per cent.
There were 184,400 jobs available to be filled immediately by employers in May in the private and public sectors.
Australia's unemployment rate was 4.3 per cent in May, the same as in April, the ABS said earlier this month.
Employment in property and business services sectors posted the biggest rise in vacancies, up from 46,500 to 50,200 jobs, or 7.96 per cent compared with the three months to February.
Available work in accommodation, cafes and restaurants continued to decline, from 9700 to 6400 jobs, or 34.02 per cent during the three months.
Vacant jobs in the sector have dropped 49.6 per cent over the past six months.
The Reserve Bank will announce its next interest rate decision on Tuesday.

So many jobs ACT can't fill them

27/06/2008 12:00:00 AM
The ACT is officially Australia's jobs paradise the only state or territory in which there are more jobs on offer than people available to fill them.

The latest job vacancy figures published by the Bureau of Statistics show there were five jobs on offer for each four Canberra residents unemployed in May making the ACT by far the tightest labour market in the country. By contrast, in the so-called ''boom'' states of Queensland and Western Australia, the unemployed outnumbered vacant jobs two to one.

In NSW and Tasmania, unemployed residents outnumbered vacant jobs three to one, and in South Australia, five to one.

The news came as the number of vacancies nationwide soared to a record high. There were 183,600 jobs vacant in May, more than double the number vacant four years ago.

Vacancies climbed 3.4 per cent in the three months to May, with private-sector vacancies up 3.6 per cent and public-sector vacancies up 1.2 per cent. Nationwide there are 2.6 unemployed people vying for every vacant job a near record low.

CommSec economist Savanth Sebastian said the results suggested the recent rate rises had not succeeded in slowing employers' demand for workers. ''There are plenty of opportunities for workers in the current environment, if they have the right skills,'' he said. ''And with the skilled migration boom picking up pace, the unemployment rate is likely to remain not far from the recent record lows in coming months.''

The news will enable the ACT Government to claim that although the territory's economic growth is the lowest in the nation, for the moment it remains the easiest place in which to find work.

The vacancies survey published yesterday will be the bureau's last.

It has axed the survey in order to find $22million in savings.

HOT JOBS

Buoyant jobs keep RBA on rates watch

James Glynn | June 26, 2008

AUSTRALIA'S labour market remained buoyant in the three months to May as job vacancies rose sharply even as interest rates hurtled to 12-year highs and a credit-crunch gutted business confidence.

Economists said today the rise in the number of unfilled job positions is a sign that any slowdown in the labour market in 2008 has only been modest, at best.

And while there are increasing indications of an economic slowdown, they say the Reserve Bank of Australia can't afford to be relaxed about the dangers of accelerated wages growth.

Australian job vacancies rose 3.4 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms during the three-month period ended May 2008 from the previous three-month period, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported today. The rise more than offset a 2.7 per cent drop in the previous quarter.

Sally Auld, co-head of Australian economics at ANZ, said the rise in job vacancies shows that an expected cooling off of the labour market in the second half of 2008 will be "modest at best."

Too much is also being read into weak May labour force data released by the ABS earlier this month that showed 20,000 fewer jobs, the first contraction in a year and half, Ms Auld said.

The data are consistent with the next move in interest rates being up, and soon, she added.

Financial markets are currently pricing in one further interest rate hike over the next year, likely taking the official cash rate target to 7.50 per cent from 7.25 per cent.

Second quarter inflation data on July 23 will do much to determine the next move in interest rates.

Craig James, chief equities economist at CommSec, said the job vacancies data confirms the strength of demand for workers remains high.

"There are less that three unemployed people vying for every vacant job, the lowest reading since records were maintained over 30 years ago," he said.

Australia's economy is in the midst of a sustained commodity price boom which has seen unemployment fall to its lowest level since the mid-1970s. The strains on the labour market and a persistent inflation problem are keeping the RBA on alert.

Kieran Davies, chief economist at ABN AMRO, said the broad sweep of labour market indicators are now pointing to a moderation in the labour market.

Importantly, it is a controlled moderation that the RBA will be content with. There is no indication that the job market is crumbling, Mr Davies said.

"The RBA can be confident that unemployment is about to rise," he said.
Unemployment now stands at 4.3 per cent.

The Australian dollar and bond markets were largely unchanged in the wake of the data.

The ABS has also attracted some criticism today from economists for its decision to scrap the job vacancies data series due to budget cuts announced in May by Treasurer Wayne Swan.

"It is ironic that cutbacks at the ABS are causing a serious erosion of our statistical knowledge of the Australian economy just when the uncertainty about our short-term economic future has increased," said Chris Caton, chief economist at BT Financial Group.

Matthew Johnson, senior economist at ICAP Australia, said cancellation of the data series would mean economists would be reliant on the less accurate private sector business surveys.
